Not Touch, Not Singing…Unless You Are Very, Very Close

Amaranth waiting for me to blow a kiss

Its very simple really. – although, the class that led me to this revelation is not.

Dont touch, Dont sing, Just breathe. Deeply. Did you know that some plant leaves die after a very limited touch by a human hand? Did you know that the plant has no way to register, accept sound and incorporate it in their life and growth? Unless you sing very, very close to the plant. Not too loud please; that might come across as “touch”. Just exhale.  A calm, full exhale on the plant leaves can increase the carbon dioxide a plant uses to create photosynthesis. About 5% of your out-breath is carbon dioxide. That amount is significantly higher than the carbon dioxide in the air around us. To greet your plant with support and to calm your own heart in so many ways, just breathe slowly, deeply and exhale slowly, deeply, fully right on the leaves of the plant. The stomata, or pores, of the plant will open in response to the increased CO2 and receive your gift. Its a small thing but very powerful in understanding and reconnecting with the Garden. So dont fall to that impulse to pet the soft leaves. And dont play Bach or Brubeck. Say good morning with an offering of CO2.

“…and we’ve got to get ourselves back to the Garden.” ~ Joni Mitchell (capital “G”)
